History

Inhabited in prehistoric times. The oldest evidence of Roman presence dates to the late 2nd-early 1st century BC. Colonization by Romans occurred during the reign of Augustus.

  • 917 AD: Castrum Pojanae established.
  • Mid-14th century to end of the 18th century: Subject to the civil Vicariate of Orgiano (during Scaliger domination).

  • Post-Venetian Republic: Under French and Austrian domination.
  • 1814: Part of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom (Austrian Empire).
  • 1866: Annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
  • Early 20th Century: Administered by the district of Lonigo.

Major events:

  • Roman Era: Land reclamation, canal construction, and road building.
  • Early 20th Century: Connection to Vicenza by railway, installation of electricity and telephone networks. Establishment of various cooperative organizations.
  • First World War: Declared a war zone, young men called to the front, town saw passage of troops and refugees.
  • Post-WWI: Peasant struggles, strikes, rallies, and violence. Social unrest led to the resignation of the municipal council and the appointment of a podestà by the fascist government. [1]
