History

Poggio Mirteto was founded in the first half of the 13th century.

Jurisdictions:

  • It was initially a possession of the Abbey of Farfa.
  • In the 16th century, it fell under the control of the Farnese family and then other families.
  • Later, it was incorporated into the Papal States.
  • Poggio Mirteto was part of the Papal States in 1861, during the national unification of Italy.

Major events:

  • In 1861, a popular revolt occurred against the pontifical authority.
  • Poggio Mirteto was a stronghold of the Resistance and anti-fascism during World War II.
  • On September 19, 1943, partisans sabotaged two German freight trains and Benito Mussolini's private train at the Poggio Mirteto Scalo station.
  • On April 7, 1944, a brutal roundup took place on Monte Tancia, culminating in the partisan battle of Arcucciola.
  • On June 10, 1944, retreating German troops shelled unarmed civilians in Poggio Mirteto, killing 15 people.[1]
