British Colonization (1788-1914)
The first party to take control of the island included 15 convicts and 7 free men on 6 March 1788. They were to prepare it for commercial development. [1] Norfolk Island became a distinct and separate settlement when the United Kingdom gave it over to Australia to administer it as an external territory. [2]
