History

The territory of Montopoli was inhabited since the Bronze Age. The first citation of the comune is dated February 4, 1055.

Jurisdictions:

  • 1923: It passed from the province of Perugia in Umbria, to the province of Rome in Lazio.
  • 1927: It became part of the province of Rieti.

Major events:

  • 1111: The German emperor Enrico V held Pope Pasquale II prisoner there.
  • 1861: The partisans of the Tevere Hunters corps were defeated.
  • 1961: A natural bridge was mined during the last conflict and collapsed.[1]
