History

Based on findings in the territory, the origin of Minervino dates back to 2000 years before Christ. It was founded by the Japige populations and later colonized by the Romans.

Jurisdictions:

  • Historically, Minervino Murge belonged to the princes of Taranto Del Balzo Orsini until the mid-15th century.
  • Subsequently, it was granted to Pirro Del Balzo through his wife.
  • In 1508, it was granted to Count Forti Onorati d'Aragona by Ferdinand the Catholic.
  • It then belonged to the Pignatelli in the 16th century, followed by the Carafa and Tuttavilla families.

Major events:

  • Participation in the riots of 1799.
  • Loss of the bishopric in 1818.
  • Popular riots in 1898, resulting in the death of three landowners.
  • Site of fascist opposition and a Nazi massacre in Murgetta Rossi in 1943.
  • A revolt in 1945 that led to Minervino "declaring war" on Italy. [1]
