Description[edit | edit source]

Menard County was named for Pierre Menard, the first lieutenant governor of Illinois. The county was organized on February 15, 1839 and its seat is Petersburg. Menard County is located in the central area of the state.[1]

Vital records consist of birth, death, marriage and divorce records. Original birth (1877) and death (1877) records are kept by the Menard while those recorded after 1916 are kept by the Illinois Department of Public Health. with a copy to the County Clerk. Original marriage records are kept by the County Clerk from 1839 to the present. Original divorce records are generally in the office of the Circuit Court Clerk.
