Tip Before Starting

The purpose of this page is to give you another example of an archive in France that has already uploaded images of their military registration records. This is the fourth of the case studies. We will use the Loire-Atlantique Archives, this site functions a little differently than the last archival site. The person to find is Jean Louis Theler. He was born in 1858.

Something to be aware of most of the archival web pages are in French. However, if you do not speak or read French well you may use google chrome with the google translate feature on your page. In the upper right of your google chrome browser at the edge of the web page address. This will not work for this archival website.


Case Study

The Loire-Atlantique Archives, this site functions a little differently than the other archival sites and is a good example of the diversity of the France departmental archives. The person to find is Jean Louis Theler. He was born in 1858.

Step 1. Go to the Loire-Atlantique Archive.

Step 2. Once on the site find the box that says ‘Rechercher un fonds numérisé’ and select it.

Step 3. A new page should open. This archive has many collections of records available for military research. For this exercise select ‘Conscrits militaires (recherche nominative).’

Step 4. A new page should open, underneath the header ‘Critères de recherche,” in the box designated‘nom’ type ‘Theler’ and select Valider.

Step 5. Now one result should appear Alexander Jean Louis Theler and click on the line. It should open up the image for his military registration.

Step 6. The digital image had similar information seen in the last three case studies. Here is the link to the image. His name here appears as ‘Alexander Jean Louis Theler’ and his matriculation number is listed as ‘3.’

Step 7. Looking at the image a general overview of information. Alexandre Jean Louis Theler was born on 3 July 1858, at Bouguenois, township of Bouage, the department of la Loire. Inferieme, resident of Bouguenais, the town of Bouage, department of the Loire-Inferieme, profession of servant/domestic son of Alexandre and of Louis Loquet, living at Bauguenois, the town of Bouage, department of the Loire.
