The Logan FamilySearch Center provides multiple pieces of equipment to help you preserve your family documents, pictures, and videos. (See descriptions below.)

Digitizing and Reservation Guidelines

  • To ensure equipment availability, click the links below to reserve desired time.
    • Most reservation slots are for one hour with a few exceptions - see descriptions below.
    • Limit reservations to two consecutive time slots.
    • Reservation for multiple machines during the same time slot will result in a cancellation of the reservation. (If there is equipment other than the one you have reserved not being used while here, ask the receptionists if you can use it to maximize your efficiency while here.)
  • Be on time. If you are 20 minutes late, your time slot may be assigned to another patron. If you are going to be late, please call the Center at 435-755-5594 to notify us.
    • Keep confirmation email to cancel or reschedule if you are unable to come.
  • While using the scanning equipment, we ask that only family-owned documents, photos, videos, and movies be scanned, digitized or converted. Please do not scan, digitize or copy any material with commercial content or copyrighted material.
    • As a general rule, a work that is created on or after January 1, 1978 is automatically protected from the moment of its creation and is ordinarily given a term enduring for the author's life plus an additional 70 years after the author's death.   • Our staff will train you on using our equipment and will be available for help and assistance during your visit.
  • Make your reservation by clicking on the "Green Reserve" button below for the desired piece of equipment.

Preparation for Your Visit

  • Bring USB flash drive or hard drive (minimum size 16GB).
  • If using the Epson photo scanner, make sure your photos are all facing the same way and are grouped by size.
  • If using the Kodak slide scanner, have your slides in order, facing the same direction, and not upside down.

Epson Photo Scanners

  • Photo scanner scans up to 60 photos per minute.
  • Each scanner station consists of a photo scanner and either an Epson 8 1/2"x11" or Epson 11"x17" flatbed scanner.
    • Flatbed scanners are best option for documents or photos in plastic covers, aged, or fragile.
    • The 8 1/2"x11" flatbed scanner can also scan negatives including large-sized (up to four inches) negatives.

SlideSnap Slide Scanner

  • Automatically captures up to 20 35mm slides a minute converting them to JPEG format.
  • Each carousel holds up to 80 slides.
  • Two slide scanners available.

Diamond Standalone VHS/Camcorder Digital Converter
Logan Utah FamilySearch Center
  • Converts VHS and VHS-C tapes to MP4 files.
    • A two-hour VHS tape creates approximately a 16GB MP4 file.
  • Converts Super 8 and MiniDV video to MP4 files.
    • You may bring your own camera to use with your tapes.
  • Note! Both VHS and Super 8/MiniDV conversions are in real time.
  • The Diamond Converter automatically breaks MP4 files into 4GB segments.
    • User might want to manually create more natural breaks.

Cassette and Reel-to-Reel Audio Converter

  • Converts cassette to MP3 files.
  • Reel-to-Reel converts 1/4" audio tape to MP3 files.
  • Both conversions are in Real time.
Due to the real time conversion, each reservation is for two hours.

Czur Book Scanner Digitizer
Logan Utah FamilySearch Center
  • Book scanner best suited for bound books utilizing "Book Curve Flattening" technology minimizing spine damage.
  • After scanning, images may be edited, adjusted, and converted to editable text using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software.
  • Images may also be saved as a multi-page regular PDF file or a searchable PDF file.
  • Images may also be saved in JPG or Word format.

  • Converts 8mm video only movie film to MP4 files.
  • Longer than real time conversion.
  • Estimated conversion times
    • 3-inch reel - 45-60 minutes
    • 5-inch reel - 2-3 hours
    • 7-inch reel - 4-5 hours
    • 9-inch reel - 5-6 hours
