County Information

Description

The county was named for Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer who was the first European to reach Florida.[2] The county is located in the northwestern area of the state.[3]

Clerk Circuit Court has marriage, divorce, probate, court and land records from 1825 and military discharge records from 1914.
County Health Department has birth, death and burial records.[4]

Taxes were levied on free white males over 21 and slaves aged 21 to 60. These persons are referred to as "polls."
