Background[edit | edit source]
The Lebanese diaspora, while historically trade-related, has more recently been linked to the Lebanese Civil War, with many Lebanese emigrating to Western countries. Because of the economic opportunities, many Lebanese have also worked in the Arab World, most notably Arab states of the Persian Gulf such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Early in the 19th century, economic hardship and political instability in Lebanon drove many Lebanese to the Americas, particularly Brazil, Argentina, and the United States. The Lebanese Civil War in the mid-20th century led to another significant wave of migration, with Lebanese people seeking refuge in countries like the United States, Western Europe, Australia, and South Africa. In recent decades, the economic opportunities offered by the oil-rich Gulf States have attracted many Lebanese, especially skilled professionals and entrepreneurs.
