County Information

Description

Lafayette County was created December 23, 1853[2] and was named for Marquis de Lafayette, the French general who rendered assistance to the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. Its county seat is Mayo. It is located in the northwestern area of the state.[3]

County Judge has marriage and probate records.
Clerk Circuit Court has divorce records from 1902, court records from 1907 and land records from 1893. [4]

Taxes were levied on free white males over 21 and slaves aged 21 to 60. These persons are referred to as "polls."
