Description
Hernando County was created 24 Feb 1843[2] and was named for the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. Its county seat is Brooksville. It is located in the west central area of the state.[3]

Tax Records
Taxes were levied on free white males over 21 and slaves aged 21 to 60. These persons are referred to as "polls."
