County Information

Description

Gadsden County was created 24 Jun 1823[2] and was named for James Gadsden of South Carolina, who served as Andrew Jackson's aide-de-camp in Florida in 1818. Its county seat is Quincy. It is located in the northwestern area of the state.[3]

Taxes were levied on free white males over 21 and slaves aged 21 to 60. These persons are referred to as "polls."
