Guide to Frederiksborg ancestry, family history and genealogy: birth records, marriage records, death records, census records, parish registers, and military records.

History[edit | edit source]

Originally (pre-1662), this area was divided between Abrahamstrup, Kronborg, and Frederiksborg fiefs. In 1662 they became counties with mostly the same names except Abrahamstrup fief became Jægerpris county. In 1793, the three counties were merged to created one big Frederiksborg county which existed until 2007. In 2007 it was merged into Region Hovedstaden.

One of the most important places in Frederiksborg county is the city of Elsinore (Helsingør). Elsinore is right on the narrowest point between Denmark and Sweden and the distance between them is less than 2 miles here. Denmark used this point to collect tolls from ships passing to and from the Baltic 1429-1857. Originally, Scania, Halland, and Blekinge used to be part of Denmark, but the annoyance of the tolls caused the Netherlands and England to force Denmark to cede this fiefs to Sweden in 1658.

The king owned virtually all of the land in Frederiksborg county and many of the peasants had their copyholds and probates conducted either by the amtstue or by one of the gods (estates) that were privately owned by the king or queen. When doing research in Frederiksborg, expect to find your ancestor's probate in the amtstue.

A 1700 census of males was conducted in Frederiksborg county. However, this means it only covers what was in Frederiksborg county in 1700. It does not cover the parts that were part of Kronborg or Jægerpris. For more information about this, click here.

Elsinore and the surrounding area was devastated by the plague in 1711. For more information about this, see The Last Plague in the Baltic Region by Karl-Erik Frandsen.
