Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with his mother in 1961, and served in the France/Belgium Mission from 1969 to 1971. Also, lived in Quebec and Alberta, Canada.

He then earned Associates degrees in Gerontology (1975) and Professional Genealogy (1978), and a Bachelor degree in University Studies (1978) - with emphasis in Religion, French, Linguistics, and Sociology) from BYU. Married to Suzann Hall (who is a Church Service Missionary in the US/Canada Zone) and father of six children and three step-children.
Initially worked with the Family History Department in 1978 in Quebec, Canada, for two years microfilming Catholic church records; then, worked 1980-1982 as head accountant at a Customs Broker in Alberta, Canada. He was rehired by the Family History Department in 1983. He worked in the Field Services unit, in the Correspondence unit over 106 countries, in the International Reference Consultant, and in the US/Canada Reference unit (since 1995).
