Task List

Step One: Open Page in Wikitext

  • From the Histories and Cities Task List, select a district. This will take you to the district's table of municipalities.
  • Click on the first available municipality. This will take you to the municipality's page.
  • Click Edit Source

Step Two: Locate Corresponding Page in Wikipedia

  • In a separate window, open Wikipedia.org
  • Search for the district that contains the municipality.
    • Several districts also have municipalities with the same name. If the municipality opens, the sidebar will contain a link to the district's page.
  • From the list of municipalities on the district's Wikipedia page, select the correct one.

Step Three: Extract Historical Information

  • From the introduction and the History section of Wikipedia, find the following type of information:
    • The date the original area was founded.
    • The date the municipality was created.
    • What district it belonged to at different periods of time.
    • Historically significant events (fires, earthquakes, battles) that may have damaged genealogical records.
  • Rephrase the historical information whenever possible so we are not directly copying Wikipedia.
  • Each point of information should be preceded by an asterisk (*), and be placed on a separate line.
  • The last bullet point should give the population of the municipality. The basic format is already provided.
    • Fill in the name of the municipality
    • Fill in the population number, (usually stated in the sidebar), rounded to the hundred.

Step Four: Format Citation

There is already a template for a citation after the last bullet point.

  • Copy the name of the wikipedia article into "PAGE NAME"
  • Copy the wikipedia article's url into "URL"
  • Write the current date in place of "DATE"
