Task List
Instructions
1. Go to the task list and put your name in the "Name" column for the item you'd like to work on.
2. Click on the link in the "Item Link" column (column D).
3. Locate the Publication Location, and the Publication Date, and add them to the respective columns on the spreadsheet. ("Pub. Location" in column G, and "Pub. Date" in column H). See examples below for where the publication information may be located, the continue to step 4 for details on how to format the information in the spreadsheet.
FamilySearch Catalog
- For entries in the FamilySearch catalog, look for the "Publication" section on the page, and use the information located there.
JSTOR
- JSTOR can be kind of tricky to locate the publication information, but it can sometimes be in the following location:
- If you only have a publisher and not a publishing location, that's ok. Just put what information you are able to find into the spreadsheet.
WorldCat
- Look for the information next to where it says "Publisher", and put that into the spreadsheet.
Google Books
- For entries in Google Books, you may need to click on the images of the pages (if it is an available option) as shown below.
- Check out the first few pages to find publication information.
- If you are unsure about the publication information or if you're having issues finding it, mark the cell of the spreadsheet with "UNKNOWN", and we may try to track it down in another phase of this project.
Other Websites
- There may be a few other websites in the spreadsheet than the ones listed above. Some sites may give the full citation of the publication instead of separating out all of the publication information pieces. Some may have the information formatted in a different order. Below are some examples of other ways you may be able to find the publication information.
Instructions continued
4. For the publishing information you were able to find, add the publisher and the publishing location into column G on the spreadsheet.
- If you have both a publisher and a location, list it in the following way in the spreadsheet: LOCATION : PUBLISHER.
- Example: Princeton, New Jersey : Nostrand
- If you just have a publisher, or just a location, then don't worry about formatting. Just put the piece of information you do have into column G as you have it.
- If you were unable to find the publisher or the location, put "UNKNOWN" in the spreadsheet.
5. Put the publishing date into column H of the spreadsheet.
- If you have a full date (including day, month, year, etc), just put the year into the spreadsheet.
- If you were unable to find the publishing date/year, put "UNKNOWN" in the spreadsheet.
An example of "UNKNOWN" in the task list:
6. Once you have entered the information into the "Pub. Location" and "Pub. Date" columns, put today's date into the "Completed" column (column B), and move on to the next item.
7. Contact Amber if you have any questions or run into any weird things.
