Project Instructions[edit | edit source]
Set Up[edit | edit source]
- Make sure you are logged in to FamilySearch and the FamilySearch Wiki.
- Select a county from the state Tracking Pages above. Check to be sure the tab at the bottom of the Tracking page says Funeral Homes!
- Scroll to the bottom of the county page to Websites and go to the FamilySearch Catalog via that link. It should take you directly to the Catalog for that county. If it does not, please let Beverly know!
- After selecting the county, select the Funeral Homes section.
- Some of these entries may already be on the page. If so, please make sure that the link goes where it is supposed to and that it is formatted correctly.
- If there ARE NO records under the Funeral Homes section:
- Go back to the Tracking Page for Funeral Homes and add a note in the "Comment" section for that county stating there was nothing in the Catalog.
- Go to the next County.
- If there ARE records under the Funeral Homes section, proceed with the Catalog Instructions below.
Add Wikitext Code[edit | edit source]
1. Add this wikitext code under the Funeral Homes header and the intro template.
2. If there are any other links already on the page, put this wikitext directly above the links.
{| style="width:100%; vertical-align:top;"
|-
|
<ul class="column-spacing-halfscreen" style="padding-right:5px;">
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
<li>LINK</li>
</ul>
|}
3. As you find funeral home links to add to the page, replace LINK with the link you create.
4. The template automatically adds an asterisk to the link, so you do not need to add one.
5. If there are more links than listed above, you can copy this code and add it as many times as you need to:
<li>LINK</li>
Adding Image-Only Catalog Links Instructions[edit | edit source]
1. Click on the Funeral Homes Catalog entry link to display the records listings.
2. Select the first record.
3. Scroll down to the Film/Digital Notes section and look for a camera icon on the right of the note.
- There may or may not be a key over the camera icon. Both are OK for this project.
- If there is nothing with a camera icon please move on to the next record.
- If there IS a camera icon please make sure to go back to the top of the page to get the information for the template below.
4. First copy the template to the template replacing LINK:
- '''DATE-DATE''' {{FSC|title #|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
- '''DATE-DATE''' {{FSC|title #|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
5. Add the dates. Copy them exactly from the title. It is not necessary to look for dates if they are not in the title. Delete the dates, if that is the case.
- Sometimes there will be two sets of dates such as "Probate Records 1857-1952; Index, 1857-1965"
- In the first date slot place the earliest date (DATE-DATE). So 1857 would go in the first slot (1857-DATE)
- In the second date slot place the latest date (1857-1965)
EXAMPLE:
- (with dates) '''1907-1924''' {{FSC|title #|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
- (without dates) {{FSC|title #|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
6. Next add the title #.
- The title number is obtained from the URL line. As you read across the URL, it will start off with familysearch.org/search/catalog/######? plus more characters.
- The title number is the number immediately after the word catalog/ and before the ?
- Copy just the number from the URL line and place it where it says title #
EXAMPLE:
- '''1907-1924''' {{FSC|533472|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
- '''1907-1924''' {{FSC|533472|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
7. Leave the item part as-is.
8. After the disp=, place the title of the film exactly as written except capitalize the first letters in the title. No need to add author or anything else.
EXAMPLE:
- '''1907-1924''' {{FSC|533472|item|disp=Affidavit Index, 1907-1924}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
- '''1907-1924''' {{FSC|533472|item|disp=Affidavit Index, 1907-1924}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
9. If the word Index is in the title, please change the "— images" at the end of the line to say "— index & images."
10. And it should look like this when previewed:
EXAMPLE:
- 1907-1924 Affidavit Index, 1907-1924(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — index & images
- 1907-1924 Affidavit Index, 1907-1924(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — index & images
11. If there are NO other entries in the Catalog, go to the next section.
12. If there ARE other Funeral Home entries in the Catalog, please go back to the start and enter each one.
Adding Links from the Internet/Google[edit | edit source]
THIS SET OF INSTRUCTIONS WILL TELL YOU HOW TO ADD INTERNET/GOOGLE LINKS.
1. In your Internet browser, type the following: (Name of county, State) Funeral Homes
- It would look like this - Albany County, Wyoming Funeral Homes (capitalization probably won't make much difference!)
2. Look down through the listings and decide which ones to use by the following criteria:
- Make sure the link goes to a real website - not a business website, etc. (In other words, makes sure the URL reflects the business' name)
- Make sure they are really in the desired county and not in another county or state. (Check the town or city against the Populated Places chart on the county page.)
3. Use the following format to enter them alphabetically under any links with dates already in the template. Or, if it's the first link in the template, put them in alphabetical order:
[URL Name of Funeral Home] in Name of City/Town.
4. If the link leads to a Social Media Page, put it in parenthesis after the name of the city/town:
[URL Name of Funeral Home] in Name of City/Town (Facebook).
- You do NOT need to add the state or county again.
- Please DO make sure you are on the Homepage - NOT the obituaries page!
Before You Leave the Page[edit | edit source]
- If there is more than one item under the Funeral Homes heading, please alphabetize them.
- Do a Show preview before saving to make sure it looks like it is supposed to.
- Before you save the page, please enter Adding Funeral Home links project to the Summary line.
- Don't forget to go back to the Task List and put a date on your part when you are done.
Thank You!
