Project Instructions

We will be adding Bible information to the County pages from the State Bible Records pages, the FamilySearch Catalog, and the Internet.

Set Up

  1. Make sure you are logged in to FamilySearch and the FamilySearch Wiki.
  2. Go to the Task List Google Sheet for the desired state above and make sure you are on the Bibles tab (at the bottom).
  • Select the county you wish to work on and sign up for it.
  • Go to the county page by hovering your mouse over the county name and clicking on the link that pops up.
  • In a seperate tab open the State Bible Records page for the desired state.
  • If there are NO records listed on the state bible page, proceed to the Adding Image-Only Catalog Links Instructions.
  • If there ARE records listed on the state bible page, proceed to the next section.

Adding Information From the State Bible Records Page to the County Page

1. Look down through the links on the State Bible Records Page and see if there are any listings with the county name in the title.

  • You DO NOT need to click on any links!

2. If there ARE NO links listing the name of the county in the title, go to the next section.
3. If there ARE links listing the name of the county in the title

From the State Bible Records Page, do the following:
  • Go into Edit Source
  • Select the entire line (you can triple click on the line)
  • Copy the selection

4. Go back to the county page and paste the information under the Bibles section.

5. Repeat as necessary.

6. When there are no other titles on the State Bible Records Page for the county you are working on go to the next section.

Adding Image-Only Catalog Links Instructions

1. On the county page, go to the Websites section and open the FamilySearch Catalog link. Make sure it goes to the correct county.

2. After checking the county, select the Bibles section.

  • If there ARE NO records under the Bible section:
    • Go back to the State Google Sheets and add a note in the "Comment" section for that county stating there was nothing in the Catalog.
    • Go to the next Section.
  • If there ARE records under the Bible section, proceed below.

3. Click on the Bible Records Catalog entry link to display the records listings.

4. Select the first record.

5. Scroll down to the Film/Digital Notes section and look for a camera icon on the right of the note.

  • There may or may not be a key over the camera icon. We will use them both.

6. First copy the template to the Bible Records section of the County page:

* '''DATE-DATE''' {{FSC|title #|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images

7. Add the dates. Copy them exactly from the title. It is not necessary to look for dates if they are not in the title. Leave the dates blank, if that is the case.

  • Sometimes there will be two sets of dates such as "Probate Records 1857-1952; Index, 1857-1965"
    • In the first date slot place the earliest date (DATE-DATE). So 1857 would go in the first slot (1857-DATE)
    • In the second date slot place the latest date (1857-1965)

EXAMPLE:

(with dates) * '''1907-1924''' {{FSC|title #|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images
(without dates) * {{FSC|title #|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images

8. Next add the title #.

  • The title number is obtained from the URL line. As you read across the URL, it will start off with familysearch.org/search/catalog/######? plus more characters.
    • The title number is the number immediately after the word catalog/ and before the ?
    • Copy just the number from the URL line and place it where it says "title #"

EXAMPLE:

* '''1907-1924''' {{FSC|533472|item|disp=title of the record}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images

9. Leave the item part as-is.

10. After the disp=, place the title of the film exactly as written except capitalize the first letters in the title. No need to add author or anything else.

EXAMPLE:

* '''1907-1924''' {{FSC|533472|item|disp=Affidavit Index, 1907-1924}}(*); at FamilySearch Catalog — images

11. If the word Index is in the title, please change the "— images" at the end of the line to say "— index & images."

12. And it should look like this when previewed:

EXAMPLE:

13. If there are NO other entries in the Catalog, go to the next section.

14. If there ARE other Bible Records entries in the Catalog, please go back to the start and enter each one.

Adding Links from the Internet/Google

THIS SET OF INSTRUCTIONS WILL TELL YOU HOW TO ADD INTERNET LINKS.

1. In your Internet browser, type the following: NAME OF COUNTY Bible Records

EXAMPLE: If you are in Aiken County, Iowa you would type Aiken County, Iowa Bible Records

2. Look down through the listings and decide which ones to use by the following criteria:

  • Make sure they are really in the desired county and not in another county or state.
  • There will be MANY pages of links in the Internet. DO NOT look past the first 2 pages of links.
    • Good links to choose might be from Ancestry, USGenWeb, State GenWeb pages, County Genealogy/Historical Societies, etc.

3. Use the following format to enter them alphabetically under the Bibles section of the county pages:

* [URL NAME OF RECORD] at NAME OF WEBSITE

EXAMPLE: [http://usgwarchives.net/sc/sca_aike.html#bibles Aiken County Bible Records] at USGenWeb Archives - South Carolina
LOOKS LIKE THIS: Aiken County Bible Records at USGenWeb Archives - South Carolina

NOTE: You DO NOT need to add a URL to the name of the website.
NOTE: If it is a premium (for pay) site, remember to add the ($) at the end of the listing.

Before You Leave the Page

  • If there is more than one item under the Bible Records heading, please alphabetize them.
  • Make sure ALL entries (those you added and those that were there previously) are correctly formatted.
  • Do a Show preview before saving to make sure it looks like it is supposed to.
  • Before you save the page, please enter Adding Bible records project to the Summary line.
  • Don't forget to go back to the Task List and put a date on your part when you are done.

Thank You!
