Add links and other genealogical content provided by the Research Facebook missionaries to the appropriate pages on the wiki.

All information to be added to the wiki is found in the FB Research Content yammer group. You do need to be invited to the group to view the threads.

Appropriate links[edit | edit source]
Links we do not want to add to the wiki:
- Repetitive links already on the applicable wiki pages
- Tiny urls or bit.ly websites. Instead put the link that it is going to. These urls can expire.
- Links to a search on the catalog. There have been several suggestions to just link to the catalog for a topic. We only do these kinds of links for very specialized reasons. Just avoid them all together.
- NOT ALL LINKS THEY SUGGEST ARE APPROPRIATE. It’s ok to leave something off. If you have a question as to if the link is really helpful, tag Danielle Batson or Kathi Hanna on the yammer post and we will leave a message on the thread whether it should be used or where it should go.
Determining Correct Wiki Pages[edit | edit source]
1. Avoid putting links on a country or state page.
2. Try finding an appropriate locality topic page such as Germany Archives and Libraries or Russia Probate Records. (See instructions below)
3. If the link is specific to a smaller locality such as a county or town, try finding a page for that locality and add it under the correct heading. (See instructions below)
4. If a wiki page does not currently exist for the link, you can create one. (See instructions below)
Online Genealogy Records Pages[edit | edit source]
NOTE: Because the unique scope and formatting of databases on Online Records pages, Kathi Hanna will be the only one to put it on those pages. EXAMPLE OF AN ONLINE RECORDS PAGE
- If you believe the collection should go on an online records page, please tag the conversation with: Online Record Page Content. Also follow the guidelines below.
Guidelines concerning collections put on Online Genealogy Records Pages:
1. Country-wide or state-wide collections of data specifically about people are the main focus.
2. Links to country-wide map collections
Links that are NOT put on Online Genealogy Records Pages:
1. Reference materials, histories, or societies that do not have databases of people's names.
4. No forums or chats links
5. Extremely limited collections, such as those that cover only a year or two (e.g., Births, 1975-1978), or a specialized group of people not related to race (such as postal workers).
EXCEPTIONS TO THE Guidelines: If there are very few online collections for a particular locality, exceptions are made to the above guidelines. As for your assignment, just follow the above guidelines and don't worry about exceptions.
How to add content to the wiki[edit | edit source]
1. Review the post on the Yammer group: FB Research Content
2. Caleb's Community Research Facebook missionaries have found these websites on the Research Facebook pages. They are to double check to see if it is already wiki. If they find a link that is not on the wiki, they will post it on yammer and will give a suggestion on where it should go. This is only a suggestion. They don’t know the wiki as well yet, so you may think of a more appropriate or additional page the link should be put on.
3. Check the wiki for the link. You can do this by copying and pasting the URL into the search field of the wiki. DO NOT CREATE A PAGE FOR THE URL. If the URL is on the wiki it should show the articles that contain the URL. Sometimes, when the URL is not found it will give results that may include a part of the URL.
4. IF LINK IS FOUND ON THE WIKI: Check the wiki page to see where the link is. If the link appears to be very important, repeat the link at the top of Topic page.
5. When you are adding a source to a topic locality page, add a heading Online Resources at the top of the page (if it is not already on the page), then, list the source/database underneath the heading.
Example: Iceland Census.

6. If the link is specific to a smaller locality such as a county or town, try finding a page for that locality. Use the appropriate heading to put the link on the page. You may need to add a heading to the page. You can add your heading with the others in alphabetical order or at the end of the list.
7. When creating a new page, only create pages that are found on the side-bar of a country or state page. For example, if you were given a link for a library in Iceland, you would go to the Iceland Genealogy page and click on, Iceland Archives and Libraries. Then add the link to the new page.
