Wiki Templates
Templates are standard wiki pages whose content is designed to be transcluded (embedded) inside other pages. Templates follow a convention that the name is prefixed with "Template:", assigning it to that namespace. Therefore you can create them like any other wiki page.
Background
- On the Creation of templates go to Templates Will everyone right click on the template creation link and go to that page.
- The three reasons for template creation in the Wiki are to
{{Name}},{{subst:Name}}and{{msgnw:Name}}
- Help:Templates ::One of the main reasons we are concerned about Templatesis the improper display of Templates and Template categories. Please go to the small edit box on the far right of Usage and click on Wikitext. Please see the noinclude wikitaxt instruction. These tell the computer to not bring these items to this page. This is what a template does. Part of to transclude is to bring the page or item on the page to this page. By putting the noinclude on the page it stops this process for this template on this page or on the item on this page.
Wiki Template Categorization
One of our jobs is to see that everything is Categorized. Template can be a challenge in this area. Because of the nature of the template special instruction are necessary to keep it from going where you don't want it. The main instruction we are using is the beginning noinclude and the ending /noinclude. Look down the page at the boxes each is a no include instruction to stop categories from following their templates on the pages that use these templates.
Controlling template inclusion
Wiki Template Clean Up
When templates are placed in any article they come with a Category and if the Category is not given a noinclude order it will show on every page it is placed on. We have many of these in the Wiki. The goal is to get these under control by placing the order before and after each template that has not been secured in this way. Example: Our first project was Category:Image map templates This is an ongoing project that will have to be checked every month or so to keep it clean.
- On the Page Category:Image_map_templates we will be putting the following on all the template pages that do not have them
<noinclude> [[Category:Image_map_templates]] </noinclude>
Image_map_templates
First go to see if there are any on the page before the lesson. Use the first as a demo and the have others bring up the others and talk them through til all are done.
- First find the page that does not have the noinclude. Regular pages should not be on this category page.
- Right click and put the article page in a different tab. To put the noinclude instruction on go into Wikitext. Then go to the bottom of the page and click on the link Template:(name of county) Clickable Neighbors. Now edit and go to Wikitext. Then put the noinclude above over the category there and save.
- Check work by going back to the Category:Image_map_templates page, reload the page and see if the article page is gone.
