History
David Thompson, fur trader, explorer and map maker working for the North West Company visits the Kalispel Tribe and trades with them in 1809. Thompson produces the first known historical documents about the Tribe. Lewis & Clark expedition estimate the Kalispel population to be approximately 1,600 in 1810. The Kalispel Indians hunt and fish along the Pend Oreille River banks. European settlement increases during the years of 1875-1885. Northern Pacific Railroad line in1883 run along the north side of the Pend Oreille River.
