French Somaliland (1880s-1967)

French Somaliland was established 1883-1887, after ruling sultans signed a treaty with France. In 1885 a treaty was signed making the Somalis a protectorate under France. After World War 2, in 1946, French Somaliland became an overseas territory of France. In 1967 it was renamed the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas, and became the independent country of Djibouti in 1977.[1]
