The Detroit Society for Genealogical Research was organized on 20 September 1936, by a group of thirty-three interested persons, which grew to one hundred eight members within the year. Its primary objective was to be a non-profit organization for the preservation and perpetuation of the records of ancestors and families of the commonwealth, and to be of assistance to the Burton Historical Collection, Detroit Public Library.

The Detroit Society for Genealogical Research has taken on the project to digitize and index all 82 years of the organization's magazine. The all name index is on our website and available to the general public. The digital version of the magazine is only available to members. If you are a member, and have signed into the website, and use the index, it will link you directly to the page referenced.
We have digitized the two volume work, Genealogy of the French Families of the Detroit River Region by Rev. Father Christian Denissen. This comprehensive work that was transcribed from the writings of Fr. Denissen provides a glimpse into the early settlers of the Detroit area -- both those of French descent and those of non-French descent.

The Detroit Society for Genealogical Research is launching a quarterly DNA Special Interest Group that meets in the computer lab of the main Detroit Public Library. We share our successes and failures in the use of this technology and some tips on how to better our understanding. See our website program schedule to dates and times.

Four times a year the Detroit Society for Genealogical Reseach Magazine is published.

The Detorit Society for Genealogical Research is closely associated with the Burton Historical Collection which is housed in the Main Detroit Public Library.
- Manuscripts from that collection are the basis for the DSGR Magazine articles and also for our full volume publications

Early each year, one of our regular meetings is our annual bus trip to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The Board of Directors meet right after the scheduled meetings and also during the Summer months to plan the following year speaker schedule

Each year, in cooperation with the Oakland County Genealogical Society, our session is held as a preview to our annual research trip to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We have speakers from the library give overviews of the holdings and methods to find information.

Q. What are the society's hours of operation?: A. Membership in DSGR is $25.00 per year which include online access to the members only area of out website (www.dsgr.org) and four issues of the DSGR Magazine. Meetings are open to the public, and are held on Saturday mornings. This allows our members to then have the afternoon free or to make use of the Burton Historical Collection of books and manuscripts.
