Casualty generally refers to any soldier lost to active military service due to death, injury, desertion, having been captured, or soldiers that are missing.

Confederate Casualty Reports

The "Confederate Casualty Reports" or "Confederate States Army Casualties: Lists and Narrative Reports, 1861-1865" (NARA M836) are comprised of unbound lists and narrative reports of casualties submitted to the Confederate War Department by units of the Confederate Army. Confederate Army regulations required that, after participating in action, each unit submit a return of the killed, wounded, and missing, together with narrative reports of the action.
