History

Founded by Greeks from Syracuse in the 7th century BC, originally called Akrillai. Rebuilt after being destroyed by the Carthaginians in 406 BC. Rebuilt again during the Timoleonic era.

Jurisdictions:

  • Akrillai (7th century BC): Founded by Greeks from Syracuse.
  • Acrillae (213 BC): Part of the Roman province of Sicily.
  • Gulfi (827 AD): Conquered by the Arabs.
  • Chiaramonte (1299): Under the Aragonese rulers, Manfredi Chiaramonte relocated Gulfi to a higher position.
  • Currently: Part of the Metropolitan City of Ragusa in Sicily, Italy.

Major events:

  • 406 BC: Destruction by the Carthaginians.
  • 213 BC: Battle where the Syracusan army was defeated by the Roman army.
  • 827 AD: Destruction by the Arabs.  
  • 1693: Nearly entirely destroyed by an earthquake and subsequently rebuilt. [1]
