"Jewish Records" is a misnomer for this category. "Jewish Records" refers to Jewish record sets on or off line. "Jewish Research" refers to the entire process and methodology for doing Jewish Genealogy. This nomenclature discussion took place before I created all the "Jewish Research" pages and made links to the previous pages that should be in the subset of "Jewish Research" and called "Jewish Records."
In this regard, please read my comments on the German Jewish Records page dated 20 February 2014 which is here. Similar talk was posted to other Jewish Records pages at the time.
I don't know that it is a good idea at all to mix categories "Jewish Research" and "Jewish Records" into one bucket. It will be getting way too cluttered in my opinion. However, if you do want to mix them together, the title of the category needs to be "Jewish Research" and not "Jewish Records" because records are a subset of the research methodology and process.

Thank you for your opinion
Thank you for your opinion on these categories. We appreciate your interest and contributions in the field of Jewish research. We have made note of your comments and will consider them.Hanna5974 23:22, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
Please keep me in the loop
I would appreciate knowing where things are going with this. Hardly a week goes by without my adding some material to the Jewish Research pages, creating a page for a new city, region or country, or adding a link to or information about a new Jewish records set. You might want to pre-post your ideas in the public Jewish Research group inside the FamilySearch groups at Yammer.com. If you are not registered at Yammer or don't know what it is, please let me know. You need an invitation to get in and I can send you one.
Kurt Matthia 02:06, 19 October 2015 (UTC) Thank you. I am in already in Yammer. I am the missionary Team Lead over Content in the Wiki. I have the assignment of reorganizing all the categories in the Wiki. In the 10 or so years the Wiki has been in place, the creation of categories has run rampant, as you can imagine. It has taken us over 200 hours so far to clean up the mess, with several frustrating meetings trying to determine where to even start.
The distinction you make over Research and Records is not used everywhere else in the Wiki, if at all. The prevailing use with locations seems to be more calling almost everything records, with the assumption that the records will be used for research .
We are trying to think of this issue from the viewpoint of a very beginning researcher. We don't think many novice or amateur researchers even know that categories exist or how to use them. We would like those that figure it out to see all the Jewish records and Jewish research articles together in one category, so if they do click on any category they immediately find everything.
If we change to your preference for Jewish Research as a category, the over 100 articles there will have to be moved manually. Moving them a second time with the global replace text will result in broken redirects. (Not to mention what it might do to links, breadcrumbs, and illustrations.) Right now, we don't have the manpower to study each article and decide whether it is a research methodology or records article and then move it manually. We might be able to address it when we have finished cleaning up all the categories which have worse problems than this. Hanna5974
Changes
1. I reinstated the category Jewish Research by Country, Region, and City. 2. The administration decision is that for purposes of the Wiki, Records and Research are interchangeable and not separate designations as you had proposed (although I am sure that helped a great deal in getting people to the correct sessions in your conference, and you certainly should use it there). 3. I created a Jewish Research category that redirects to Jewish Records. Anyone trying to find the records using the term research will be redirected to the whole collection. 4. All of your "Research" articles are now listed both in the Category: Jewish records and in the category:Jewish Research by Country, Region, and City. This will create two different access paths and hopefully reach more people. Could you please check and make sure I got everything into that category that you wanted there? Add the category to anything else you need, but keep the Jewish Records category also. 5. If you would be so kind, when you write articles about research in new locations, please post them in both categories.
We are so grateful for all the work and fine articles you have contributed to the Wiki, and hope you will continue. We hope this plan of categories will result in more exposure to your work so that more users will benefit from it. Hanna5974 21:55, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
