History

Studies suggest Casnate and Bernate have pre-Roman, particularly Celtic, origins. The oldest records of the names date back to the mid-13th century, with the forms Castenate and Brinate.

Jurisdictions:

  • Casnate was one of the oldest towns in the Pieve of Fino Mornasco.
  • During the Ten Year War between Como and Milan, Casnate was occupied by the Milanese.
  • The Pieve of Fino Mornasco, including Bernate and Casnate, was definitively ceded to Como after the conflict.
  • In Napoleonic times, Bernate with Gussa was annexed to Como from 1808 to 1816.
  • In 1853, after the provisional annexation of Lombardy to the Kingdom of Sardinia, it became autonomous again, later taking the simple name of Bernate.
  • The municipalities of Casnate and Bernate Rosales were merged into a single municipality on July 1, 1937, effective October 10 of the same year.
