Guide to Casamassima municipality, Italy ancestry, family history, and genealogy: birth records, marriage records, death records, census records, and military records.

History

Casamassima was founded during Roman times. By the end of the 10th century, it had developed into a well-organized community.

Jurisdictions:

  • For centuries, Casamassima was controlled by various Apulian lordships, often dependent on the fiefs of neighboring towns like Conversano and Acquaviva delle Fonti.
  • In 1609, the fiefdom, which was previously owned by the Acquaviva family, was acquired by the Portuguese Vaaz family (of Jewish origin).
  • In 1667, the control of Casamassima was ceded to the Neapolitan D'Aponte family.

Major events:

  • 1347 Attack: Luigi I the Great of Hungary attacked Casamassima. Despite the town's preparations, Luigi's well-trained troops prevailed, leading to killings, looting, and fires within the town.
  • 1658 Plague Epidemic: During a plague epidemic in Bari, Casamassima adopted a unique measure: its buildings were painted with a mixture that included blue. This action is popularly believed to have helped protect the town from the plague. [1]
