History

The sub-Appennine area where Capranica Prenestina is located was inhabited before the vulgar era. The town is first mentioned in a Papal Bull of 970.

Jurisdictions:

  • 970: Part of the possessions granted by Pope John XIII to his sister Stefania.
  • Later: Followed the Crescenzi family, then the Colonna family.
  • 1252: Assigned to Oddone Colonna.
  • 1298: Destroyed by the papal troops of Bonifacio VIII.
  • 1417: Indirectly affected by the ascent of Martino V (Oddone Colonna) to the papacy.
  • 1442: The Colonna family relinquished feudal ties to the Capranica family's possessions in the Prenestino territory.
  • 1484: Besieged during the "war of salt" by papal troops allied with Venice, defended by the Colonna.
  • 1492: Taken over by Pope Alexander VI (Borgia).
  • 1503: Returned to the Colonna family by Pope Julius II.
  • 1568: Angelo Capranica acquired the castle and established his family's rule.
  • Later: Passed to the Barberini family.
  • 1870: The Barberini relinquished feudal rights to the commune of Capranica Prenestina.

Major events:

  • An early settlement was destroyed by fire, leading to the relocation of inhabitants.
  • 1298: Destroyed by the papal troops of Bonifacio VIII.
  • 1484: Besieged during the "war of salt".
  • May 23 and 25, 1944: Bombed by Allied forces, causing 39 deaths and 27 injuries.[1]
