History

The oldest confirmed settlement dates back to the Bronze Age, around 1500 BC.

Jurisdictions:

  • 241 BC: After the capture of Falerii, it became part of the Roman domain.
  • 8th century: The Pope began to govern the territory economically.
  • 1076: It was part of the Domusculta Capracorum.
  • 1410: The senate of Rome sold the city to Gentile Orsini.
  • 1558: Campagnano and other castles were annexed to the Duchy of Bracciano.
  • 1662: Flavio Orsini sold the city to Flavio Chigi, under the control of the papacy.
  • 1817: The town of Campagnano regained full autonomy in all its old territory except Polline Martignano, a fraction that separated in 1925, and Magliano, which split in 1958.

Major events:

  • Clashes between Etruscans and Romans following the defeat of Veii.
  • The Martyrdom of Saint Alexander in the third century AD.
  • The various occupations and pressures from the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Lombards, Franks and Saracens, causing abandonment of rural areas.
  • The black plague in Rome during the 15th century, causing an influx of wealthy people into Campagnano.[1]
