History
The first settlement of the area which would eventually become the municipality of Benjamin Constant probably started in the first decades of the 18th century. Founded by the Jesuits near the mouth of the Javari river, the village of Javari already existed by 1750 and was occupied by the Ticuna Indians. In this village, the Headquarters of the Captaincy would be established according to the Royal Charter of July 18, 1755 of the Portuguese government, addressed to the governor of Grão-Pará, Mendonça Furtado.
In 1766 the village of São Francisco Xavier de Tabatinga was founded. In 1866, the boundary between Brazil and Peru was established near Tabatinga.
In 1898, the Municipality of Benjamim Constant was created by dividing of the territory of the municipality of São Paulo de Olivença. The name of the municipality was given at the suggestion of General Cândido Mariano Rondon when he headed the mixed commission of Letícia in honor of General Benjamin Constant Botelho de Magalhães who was the promoter of the movement of November 15, 1889 that proclaimed the republic.
In 1928, the seat of the municipality was transferred to the village of Esperança. On March 31, 1938, Benjamin Constant was designated as a city and in 1952, the district of Benjamin Constant was created. The municipality was framed as "Area of National Security" in 1968.
