British Colonization (1757-1947)[edit | edit source]

Following the Battle of Plassey in 1757, in which the people of Bengal had aided the French, Bengal became part of the British East Indian Company; it was the first Indian subcontinent to fall into British control. In 1905, the Eastern Bengal and Assam providence was created which partitioned Bengal. In 1912 it was reorganized, and East and West Bengal were reunited; Assam becoming its own province. In 1947, East and West Bengal were partitioned again. West Bengal became part of the Constituent Assembly of India and East Bengal part of Pakistan. In 1971, Bengali people revolted against Pakistanian rule and a constitution for the People's Republic of Bangladesh was adopted in 1972.[1]
