Introduction

Wikipedia has more about this subject: Livestock branding

The practice of branding livestock has existed since ancient times. In the United States, this was inherited from Western European traditions. In early town records of New England, there were lists of the brands used by the local residents. Livestock brands were registered with local or state governments. The "brand" became a property right that could be bought, sold, leased and inherited.
