Albania is a country in Europe bordered by Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Greece. The Ottoman Empire controlled Albania from 1478 until 1912. The official language is Albanian.[1]

Since 2000, Albania has been divided into 12 counties (qarqe or qarqet), also sometimes known as prefectures (prefekturë)[2]. The counties are the country's primary administrative divisions and are further subdivided into 61 municipalities.[1]
