Geographic location

Aberdeen, Idaho, is located along the Snake River in Bingham County in the southeastern part of Idaho. Aberdeen's Main Street is also known as Idaho State Highway 39.

Cemeteries

Aberdeen has two cemeteries. Aberdeen Cemetery is located to the East of Aberdeen at 2670 West 1750 South. Homestead (or Mennonite) Cemetery is located to the South of Aberdeen at the intersection of 3000 West and Funk Road (also known as 2000 South). As of the year 2010, all headstones were photographed and placed on findagrave.com. The sexton records up to the year 2004 are also available online, but it should be noted that there are various errors and omissions.

Many of the membership records covering these units from the date of their creation to about 1948 have been microfilmed and are available at the FamilySearch Library in Salt Lake City or at its FamilySearch Centers. Records of the (1908-1948) are included in this collections. Originally, there was one ward in Aberdeen, eventually there were three wards. In 2010, the third ward was dissolved into the first and second wards. There is also a Spanish Branch.

History

The City of Aberdeen covers exactly one square mile. Aberdeen, Bingham County, Idaho, began as a dry land farming area in the early 1900s. t was named by Francis Sweetheart who is said to have named it either for Aberdeen, Scotland, or perhaps simply to place it first in an alphabetical listing. Aberdeen is located in the Snake River Valley and is the terminus of abranch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad.
Early settlers include Francis Sweetheart, Samuel Neville, Nils A. Pehrson, Alma Rigby, John F. Monson, Wilhelm Carlson, and Leonard H. Elias, Roy Phillips, and James Stratton. The settlement greatly benefitted from the Aberdeen-Springfield canal system which brought additional water into the area. The total population of the Aberdeen Precinct was 1,761 in 1930; of these 646 resided in the town of Aberdeen. In 2000, the total population was 2,000.

History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Aberdeen, Idaho

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was established quite early in the area as a part of the Sterling Ward. On Oct 3, 1915, they were organized as the Aberdeen Branch. Regular meetings were commenced in private houses. On Dec 3, 1916 the branch was organized as a so-called “independent” branch (reporting directly to the presidency of the Blackfoot Stake).
